CERAMIC

ABOUT :

The art of ceramics, with its deep connection to the earth and nature, offers much more than the creation of simple objects. It represents a therapeutic process, a practice that soothes the mind and nourishes the soul. By using the earth as a raw material, ceramicists enter into symbiosis with nature, drawing from its elements to shape works imbued with beauty and sensitivity. Ceramic art unfolds a healing power when integrated into architecture, enriching living and working spaces. Structures that incorporate ceramic elements, such as tiles, tiles, and terracotta pots, offer a unique sensory experience, evoking the warmth of nature and the softness of the earth.

Apprentice ceramicist

Felipa Almeida – Pop Up exhibition

INFO

Alongside my training in painting on azulejos in Portugal, I worked as an apprentice ceramicist at Sedimento, a production studio run by Maud Tephany and Marilyn Pierre. I wanted to learn ceramics as part of my architectural profes- sion to understand the complexity of the material and to use it in my future architectural projects.

It was on the second table dia- gonally from the entrance of the Sedimento studio, at 31 Travessa Santo Ildefonso, that I learned to beat, shape, smooth, and connect with porcelain, earthenware, and stoneware. Far from the learning of my architectural curriculum, but also in a form of continuity, I savored each of the days spent enriching myself both sensibly and professio- nally. These ceramics and azulejo painting workshops, immersed in the winding and authentic alleys of the Portuguese capital, were a real life experience and allowed me to expand the realm of possibilities regarding this tactile and thoughtful material.

INFO

Mobile designed and produced on the occasion of the fifth anniversary of the Sedimento workshop in Lisbon. Made of Paperclay, a cellulose clay, for its physical qualities in terms of resistance, stability, and lightness, I opted for a metal structure made of 1.5 mm wire inserted into 2 mm PVC tubes to generate horizontal movement in addition to the rotation provided by the environment in which it is displayed.

The mass of the elements that constitute it contradicts the idea of lightness and is balanced by the naive motifs in cobalt blue enamel, whose entire design can only be revealed by rotation.. With dimensions of 1 x 1.5 m, this mobile echoes travels and the duality of our emotions.

Details : Commission for an exhibition, Lisbon 2022.

100 x 150 cm, paper clay, wire.

The rhythm is ever-changing, evading any predictable pattern, as if the work is continually reborn through its poetic and playful essence.

Children’s ceramic workshop

INFO

In these ceramics workshops for children (ages 4-11), clay becomes a medium for both artistic expression and personal growth. As they shape the material with their hands, children not only discover the joy of creation but also connect with their own imaginations, bringing their ideas to life.

The act of molding clay is therapeutic, encouraging calm and focus through repetitive, gentle movements. This hands-on process boosts their confidence, inviting them to explore freely, develop patience, and find satisfaction in creating something unique. These workshops are a gateway to self-expression, where learning a craft becomes an experience of discovery and joy.
